Cylinders are used to control the locking functions of locks, exit devices and auxiliary locks by the use of a key. Keying of locks and cylinders is an essential functional of door hardware. Pin tumbler keys are usually grooved on both sides providing security by limiting the keyways into which it can be inserted. By varying the number, locations and shapes of the grooves and the thickness and height of the key, thousands of different key ways can be created.
